As a minimum, both prospective parents of a litter should have been hip and elbow scored and ideally the results are low and even for hips (the median for Labradors is 9) and a 0 score for elbows.
They both need a clear eye certificate dated within the previous year of the date of their mating. This is a clinical test to check for 5 eye diseases in Labradors: Hereditary Cataract, Multifocal Retinal Dysplasia, Total Retinal Dysplasia, Central Progressive Retinal Dysplasia, General Progressive Retinal Atrophy
By using DNA tests, affected puppies for the following diseases can be avoided: PRA-prcd, EIC, CNM, SD2, HNPK and, more recently, MCD and STGD. Carriers should be kept in the gene pool to maintain genetic diversity; they can be mated to a clear and should not produce an affected puppy.

As well as looking for good health results in the prospective parents of a litter, they should also have an agreeable temperament.
To quote the breed standard "Good tempered." "Kindly nature" "No trace of aggression or undue shyness."
For me, the hallmark of a Labrador is it's easy going nature to both man and beast, friendly (without being too excitable) and not easily upset or worried.

Dilute Labradors (Silver, Charcoal, Champagne) have never been a part of the history of the breed. By all accounts the Kelloggs Kennel in the USA in the 1950's tried to develop a pointing Labrador and crossed them with Weimaraners (who are dilute). However, it was not until 2006 that the first dilute Labrador was imported in whelp into the UK from the USA. That's nearly 100 years since the first breed standard was written in 1916 when the Labrador Retriever Club, the first Labrador club, was formed and it stated the colours were, "brown, yellow and black."
The development of the internet and subsequent ease of access to information along with the desire to make money from something "rare" has led to a situation where the dilute gene from another breed (and that breeds health and temperament) is now spreading into the UK population of Labradors. Thankfully there is some recognition of this problem and an attempt is being made to keep lines pure by DNA testing.
You can read more about the problem of Dilute Labradors HERE on the breed council website.
